GITEX Nigeria 2026 has officially opened in Abuja, marking the second edition of West Africa's largest technology, artificial intelligence, and startup event and placing Nigeria's sovereign AI ambitions at the center of regional discourse.

The event, which runs from August 31 to September 3, 2026, is being held under the patronage of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and spans venues across Abuja and Lagos. It brings together government officials, global technology leaders, investors, and startups to explore opportunities in Africa's rapidly expanding digital economy.

Nigeria's Sovereign AI Strategy

At the heart of this year's GITEX Nigeria is the country's National AI Strategy, which aims to position Nigeria as a leader in artificial intelligence development across the African continent. Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), has emphasized that the event positions Nigeria to advance its sovereign AI agenda — a framework designed to ensure that AI development aligns with national interests, data sovereignty, and local innovation capacity.

The concept of sovereign AI has gained traction globally as nations seek to reduce dependence on foreign technology platforms and develop domestic AI capabilities. For Nigeria, Africa's most populous nation and largest economy by GDP, the stakes are particularly high. The country's tech ecosystem, centered in Lagos, has produced several prominent fintech unicorns and is increasingly attracting international investment.

Digital Transformation Across West Africa

GITEX Nigeria is part of a broader push to drive digital transformation across West Africa, a region of over 400 million people where internet penetration remains below 40 percent but is growing rapidly. The event features exhibitions, keynote addresses, and startup pitch competitions designed to showcase regional innovation and attract capital.

Nigeria's government has positioned the event as a platform for advancing several key priorities, including expanding broadband infrastructure, developing local semiconductor and hardware capabilities, and building a skilled technology workforce. The country's tech sector has been one of its fastest-growing industries, contributing an estimated 15-18 percent of GDP in recent years.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite the optimism, significant challenges remain. Nigeria's technology sector continues to grapple with infrastructure deficits, including unreliable power supply, limited fiber-optic connectivity outside major cities, and a brain drain of skilled professionals to Europe and North America. The government's removal of fuel subsidies and currency devaluation have also increased operating costs for tech companies.

However, the sovereign AI push represents a strategic bet that developing domestic AI capabilities — from natural language processing for indigenous languages to AI-powered solutions for agriculture, healthcare, and financial services — can create economic value and reduce long-term dependence on imported technology.

Regional Significance

GITEX Nigeria also serves as a convening point for technology leaders from across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), fostering cross-border partnerships and knowledge sharing. The event's focus on AI sovereignty comes at a time when the African Union is developing its own continental AI policy framework, and when global powers including the United States, China, and the European Union are competing for influence in Africa's digital infrastructure.
